In a recent Government report, the largest growth of employees from 2015-16 in the Australian Public Service were trainees at 140 per cent. This in itself is evident of the changing nature of work and the rise opportunities for up skilling the industry and embracing the direction of the future workforce. This session will look into how organisations can utilise workforce planning and HR Metrics to keep up with the latest workforce trends to better prepare for rapid growth in the future.

9:50 AM - 10:30 AM Case Study: Supporting Indigenous Peoples and Traditional Skills and Knowledge in the Workforce Through the Indigenous Pathways Project

Parks Australia is part of the federal environment portfolio and is responsible for the management of seven Commonwealth National Parks. In these places, land and sea management include requirements to engage specific traditional skills and knowledge to ensure that the connection to sea and country is maintained. This brings a unique dimension to Park based engagement and employment, as there is a need to recognise the traditional skills and knowledge that Indigenous staff bring to our places. With reference to the Indigenous Pathways (IP) project, this session with discuss:

· How the project will review the Indigenous employment and engagement needs and confirm the most suitable pathway models for each place
· Changing the way Parks Australia operates to meet Traditional Owner expectations in their Jointly Management parks and support government priorities in relation to improving employment outcomes for Indigenous Australians more generally
· How metrics, workforce planning and regular reporting is used as evidence to recognise the critical skills missing and the positive impact traditional skills can have in the workforce

Using workforce data to support workforce planning and making informed decisions is not a new concept but it has been difficult to connect the right data with the right problems at the right time. This presentation strips back the myths about data analytics and its important connection to all HR professionals and senior leaders to drive strategy and change. With reference to what is happening within the NSW Government in realising the potential of vast information available, Scott will also discuss:

  • How a focus on access, simplicity in messaging and building capability within the sector have become a focus for development
  • Making the analytic connection between the efforts of the workforce and the outcomes agencies are delivering
  • How the measurement of sector wide key performance indicators is providing a workforce focus in achieving our desired community outcomes

CSIRO is currently embarking on a ‘SWITCH’ strategy, which challenges staff to switch the way they think and to switch on a collaboration mindset. As part of the strategy, CSIRO has focussed its workforce trend metrics on three areas: Attraction, Retention and Mobility. This session will explore how CSIRO uses consultation and metrics to increase buy-in to innovative workforce mobility programs and to reinforce the importance of strategic alignment.
  • Boosting secondment numbers to help build relationships and foster collaboration with universities, government and industry
  • Understanding the specific metrics and analysis needed to plan for talent sourcing and talent mapping
